26 juli 2011 Dear colleagues, During the last years we have been successful in collecting the relevant information of children born with biliary atresia in The Netherlands into a database (NeSBAR). This would not have been possible without the help of many people involved at the different academic centers across the country. The value of this prospective database has become clear, as illustrated by the present thesis of Willemien de Vries, which will be defended at September 14th, 2011 in Groningen. For example, the database has offered new insights into the vitamine K prophylaxis for breastfed infants in The Netherlands, which has recently led to adaptation of the national preventive guideline. On the occasion of the thesis defense we have organized a small symposium with among the speakers two international experts on biliary atresia: Mark Davenport (Londen) and Claus Petersen (Hannover). We heartily invite you to join us in the symposium and thesis defense. We are convinced that the NESBAR database will continue to be a great asset to further improve the timely diagnosis and treatment of infants with biliary atresia. During the symposium we will highlight the insights obtained so far and to discuss some of the remaining challenges for the near future. Ries de Langen, pediatric surgeon Meer informatie
